Spray Foam Insulation in the Ottawa Valley
Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) has become a popular insulation choice in Renfrew County and across Ontario, and for good reason. In a climate where winter temperatures drop to −30°C and summer humidity creates cooling challenges, spray foam offers a unique combination of insulation, air sealing, and vapour control — all in a single application.
Unlike traditional batt or blown-in insulation, spray foam is applied as a liquid that expands to fill the cavity completely, forming a continuous, seamless barrier. No gaps, no compression, no settling over time. Open-Cell vs. Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Open-Cell Spray Foam
Open-cell spray foam has a lower density and softer consistency. It expands aggressively when applied, filling cavities completely and trimming easily after curing. At R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch, it provides the highest R-value per inch of any common insulation material. It is ideal for interior wall cavities, attic floors (where high R-value in a shallow cavity is needed), and ceiling assemblies.
The key limitation: open-cell foam is not a vapour barrier. In Ontario Climate Zone 6 (which includes all of Renfrew County), a vapour barrier is required on the warm side of insulation. If using open-cell spray foam, a separate vapour barrier — typically 6-mil polyethylene — must be installed. This adds cost and complexity.
Closed-Cell Spray Foam
Closed-cell spray foam is denser, harder, and more expensive. Each cell is sealed, giving the material its characteristic rigidity and making it resistant to water and air infiltration. At sufficient thickness (typically 2 inches or more), closed-cell foam qualifies as a vapour barrier, meeting Ontario Building Code requirements without additional poly sheeting.

Rim Joists
Rim joists (the band joist around the perimeter of the basement or crawlspace) are one of the most important locations for spray foam. When Closed-Cell Replaces a Vapour Barrier
Under the Ontario Building Code, closed-cell spray foam installed at a minimum thickness of 2 inches (R-12 to R-16 depending on the product) is considered a Class 2 vapour retarder, meeting the requirement for Climate Zone 6. Some local building officials may require a thicker application or an additional vapour barrier in specific assemblies — always confirm with your building department before proceeding.
